Tilghman Island is a small community on Maryland's eastern shore. Like many towns along the Chesapeake Bay, it is a haven for people who enjoy tranquility on the waterfront. Take a short boat ride from Tilghman across the open water and you soon arrive at Poplar Island, a strip of land that is even more remote, and uninhabited.

A strange looking motorized raft, loaded with all kinds of cameras, sensors and high-tech widgets, looks like an invader from outer space. But it serves the down-to-earth purpose of making extraordinary maps of waterways of the Chesapeake Bay watershed in the Eastern United States.

For hundreds of years, watermen of the Chesapeake Bay have made a living by harvesting oysters. In the last 50 years, the number of oysters has declined dramatically.

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in America — the third largest in the world. A century ago it boasted an oyster fishery second to none. Ships reportedly would run aground on its mountainous oyster reefs. No more. The shellfish population has been devastated by overfishing, pollution and development. But, efforts are underway to rebuild the Bay's oyster reefs.

There were once so many oysters in the 300 kilometer-long Chesapeake Bay, Native Americans named the inlet "Tschiswapeki" meaning "Great Shellfish Bay."

Sue Beffel is the site leader for the cleanup at Colvin Run. The Virginia stream is one of 428 cleanup sites all along the Potomac River, which runs through Washington, DC and flows into the Chesapeake Bay, an estuary on the Atlantic coast. There's a wide variety of trash to clean up, including tires, plastic bottles, beer cans, and other careless cast-offs.

Considering the size of the Chesapeake Bay which sprawls through six states and Washington, DC, Judy says, much more needs to be done. The Marylanders Grow Oysters program is part of a larger coordinated recovery strategy, including research, monitoring and public programs. Judy says the end game is the same: to jump start Mother Nature.

Each blue crab only has between about 60 and 100 grams of meat in them. So sellers most often sell them by the bushel, meaning in groups of about 60 to 100. People usually buy them when they are feeding a lot of people. The so-called crab feast has become a summer tradition in the Chesapeake region.

Pete White works with Captain White’s Seafood City in Washington, D.C. The family-owned business gathers crabs and other seafood from the bay and sells it at its store right along the Potomac River. White told VOA that his family has been in the business for about 100 years. He is a big fan of Chesapeake blue crabs.

Don Webster, an extension specialist at the University of Maryland, agrees. Since the late 1970s, he has worked to support aquaculture production in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States — specifically, in the Chesapeake Bay, the nation's largest estuary. His specialty is oysters.
